Celery … the next superfood?

I haven’t blogged for quite a few weeks. I went to visit my best friend in Basel Switzerland over the Easter break and it was absolutely wonderful. We had such a great time… The weather was amazing, I spent a few days exploring like a real tourist around Zurich and we enjoyed lots of wonderful, delicious food.

But now, it is back to reality, aka work 🙂 and I am getting back into my normal healthy eating routine. For the last week I have started my morning with a juice – containing celery, ginger, and lemon. Some might argue and say that sounds a bit more like a smoothie. Okay, I already know what you are thinking. “Really, celery juice… you must be joking?”  It might sound disgusting but actually it is pretty good. And trust me, my liver is also thanking me for it.

This overlooked, underestimated, unremarkable vegetable, that so often goes limp in the refrigerator, can be far more powerful than you actually realize. Especially if you know how to apply it to your life.

If you want to have clearer skin, brighter eyes, a stronger body and get your energy back, then you have to give celery juice a chance. Cause it really works. One of the most important benefits for me is the fact that it helps to lower inflammation. As we all know, inflammation can create havoc in our bodies. Inflammation causes oxidative stress. Oxidative stress causes more inflammation and so forth. It can become a vicious circle.

Celery is quite unique compared to other vegetables. It contains a substance called Sodium Nitrate which our bodies convert to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps relax our arteries, which reduces blood pressure and improves blood flow throughout the body, including our brains. There are some studies that show that people who consume the most sodium nitrate from their food have the lowest risk of cognitive decline or dementia.

It has a very strong pungent flavour, but I absolutely love it. I use my Vitamix blender to blitz it up and I drink it on an empty stomach. I use a whole bag of celery sticks each morning. Celery is definitely one of the vegetables I buy organic. As it has been on the Dirty Dozen list for a long time, and it is one of the vegetables that are highly sprayed by pesticides. Let’s look at a few benefits of including more celery in your diet:

  • Celery is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory foods, because it starves out unproductive bacteria, yeast, mold, fungus, and viruses that are present in the body.
  • Celery flushes out toxins and debris out of the intestinal tract and liver.
  • Celery helps good bacteria thrive.
  • Celery alkalizes the gut because it is high in bioactive sodium.
  • Celery contains cofactor micro trace mineral salts – which are varieties of sodium and other trace minerals – that work symbiotically and systemically with each other. This helps to raise the body’s pH and rid toxic acids from the body. This process is ideal to cleanse and repair intestinal linings.
  • Celery improves kidney function.
  • Celery helps to restore the adrenals and can even bring ease one’s mind and thought patterns, with it’s mineral salts feeding electrical impulse activity and supporting neuron function, which is key if you suffer with ADHD, brain fog, or memory loss.
  • Celery hydrates on a deep cellular level, lessening your chances of suffering from migraines.
  • Celery restores the entire digestive system.
  • Etc….

It is sometimes funny how we so easily can write off the simplest measure that can help us to heal. For example, like drinking celery juice first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.

Sometimes the simplest approach is the best !!

Here are a few tips for you:

  1. To press the reset button on your body, juice celery by itself. For the full effect, drink a full 450-470ml of fresh celery juice daily and make sure it is on an empty stomach to raise hydrochloric acid levels most efficiently.  For dramatic results, drink two 450-470ml glasses of fresh celery juice per day.
  1. If your goal is to cleanse your body of toxic heavy metals such as mercury, aluminum, lead, copper, cadmium, nickel, and arsenic, add a half cup of coriander when you are juicing your celery.
  1. An easy way to get more celery into your diet is to add two to four sticks of it when blending the smoothie of your choice.

Why don’t you try it for yourself and let me know how it works for you? And if you see any health benefits from it. But just remember, it will not just happen overnight. You have to try it out for a while to see the health benefits.
